Working in the janitorial or sanitation industry is an inherently difficult job. It commonly requires the workers to engage in physical labor that can be taxing on your body, including working in potentially hazardous environments, exposure to toxic substances, and generally undesirable situations. Too often we find that employers fail to recognize the inherent difficulties of the positions and environments, fail to foster safe working conditions, fail to employ managers and supervisors who treat workers fairly, and allow hostile work environments to go unchecked.
We routinely represent workers in the janitorial and sanitation industry in dealing with hostile work environments and discriminatory practices. We also observe that janitorial and sanitation workers are often made to work through unpaid ‘lunch breaks’ because things get ‘too busy’. That is wholly improper and is wage theft. If you are working, you have an absolute right to be paid!
While most people do not want to have to take action against their employer, it always makes sense to know your rights so that you can evaluate whether the things you are experiencing are unlawful.
