Working in the construction and labor industry is a demanding job. It normally requires long hours and work that can be very physically taxing to your body. Too often we find that employers fail to recognize the inherent difficulties of the positions and fail to create safe working environments, fail to employ managers and supervisors who treat workers in humane and fair ways, and allow hostile work environments to go unchecked.
We routinely represent construction industry workers in dealing with hostile work environments and discriminatory practices based on disabilities and failure to make reasonable accommodations. We also often hear of discriminatory practices based upon race, religion, sex, age and sexual orientation. We also observe that construction workers are often made to work through unpaid ‘lunch breaks’ because things get ‘too busy’. It is also common for employers to fail to pay workers for the time they spend traveling to and from remote job sites. That is wholly improper and is wage theft. If you are working, you have an absolute right to be paid!
While most people do not want to have to take action against their employer, it always makes sense to know your rights and to become educated as to whether the things you are experiencing are improper.
